She Has A Name, an Alberta-made independent film will be screened in Calgary, February 10 – 12 at 7 p.m. at the Plaza Theatre (1133 Kensington Rd NW. Calgary, AB.)
The new film from Unveil Studios, exposes the multi-billion dollar global human trafficking industry that sells children into the sex trade. Two million children are currently being exploited in the commercial sex trade every year (UN). Less than 1% are ever rescued.
She Has A Name aims to change these statistics.
The film is an adaptation of the critically acclaimed stage play by Albertan Andrew Kooman that had its World Premiere in Calgary, Alberta in 2011, selling out every show.
The film adaptation is written, directed and produced by Alberta-born Kooman brothers. Producers Donna Abraham and Shari Aspinall are also originally from Alberta where the film was fully funded.
Vancouver actor Giovanni Mocibob, familiar to Alberta audiences for his work at on the Rosebud stage, stars as Jason and New York actor Teresa Ting is Number 18. Eugenia Yuan (Memoirs of a Geisha), Gil Bellows (The Shawshank Redemption), and Will Yun Lee (The Wolverine, Hawaii Five-0) round out the international cast.
The story of She Has a Name follows Jason, a lawyer, who poses as a john to build a legal case against a ruthless pimp trafficking girls into Thailand. He meets Number 18, a girl forced to work as a prostitute in a busy Bangkok bar, and discovers her testimony is key to proving his case.
To raise awareness of this issue, She Has A Name has partnered with global anti-trafficking agencies that work tirelessly every day to prevent trafficking, bring perpetrators to justice for their heinous crimes, and provide education and social services to trafficking victims so that they thrive upon rescue and rehabilitation.
Not only will audiences be thrilled by the story, She Has A Name will also spread the word about the prevalence of human sex trafficking. A portion of the film’s proceeds will go directly to frontline efforts to end trafficking throughout the world.
A Question and Answer session with the filmmakers will take place after the screenings on Friday and Saturday.
