She Has A Name, an Alberta-made independent film will be screened in Cochrane, Alberta by the Chinook Film Group on January 18 at 7 p.m. at the Cochrane Movie House during Human Trafficking Awareness Month.
The new film from Unveil Studios, exposes the $150 billion global human trafficking industry that sells children, women and men as commodities. Two million people are currently being exploited in the commercial sex trade every year (UN). Less than 1% are ever rescued. She Has A Name aims to change these statistics.
The film is an adaptation of the critically acclaimed stage play that had its World Premiere in Calgary, Alberta in 2011, selling out every show. The film adaptation is written and directed by Alberta-born Kooman brothers.
Eugenia Yuan (Memoirs of a Geisha), Gil Bellows (The Shawshank Redemption), and Will Yun Lee (The Wolverine, Hawaii Five-0) make up just some of the international cast and crew, who collectively represent 10 different nations.
The story of She Has a Name follows Jason, a lawyer, who poses as a john to build a legal case against a ruthless pimp trafficking girls into Thailand. He meets Number 18, a girl forced to work as a prostitute in a busy Bangkok bar, and discovers her testimony is key to proving his case. When his investigation starts to unravel, Jason realizes that, rather than save 18 from her horrific circumstances, he has put her life at risk.
To raise awareness of this issue, She Has A Name has partnered with global anti-trafficking agencies that work tirelessly every day to prevent trafficking, bring perpetrators to justice for their heinous crimes, and provide education and social services to trafficking victims so that they thrive upon rescue and rehabilitation.
Not only will audiences be thrilled by the story, She Has A Name will also spread the word about the prevalence of human sex trafficking. A portion of the film’s proceeds will go directly to frontline efforts to end trafficking throughout the world.
Director Matthew Kooman and Executive Producer Lance will be present for a Question and Answer session after the screening. Tickets are $10 and are available while supplies last at www.shehasanamefilm.com as well as locally at The Gentry Espresso & Wine Bar and Tea… and Other Things.
