She Has A Name has been nominated for two Crown Awards. The Alberta-made production, based on a human trafficking incident in Thailand, has been nominated in the following categories:
- Best Picture
- Best Drama for films over $250,000
“It’s exciting to see the film continue to be well received by critics and audiences both in Canada and other parts of the world,” says director Matthew Kooman. “Audiences from all walks of life are responding very passionately to this film, and we look forward to bringing it to more markets around the world.”
She Has A Name recently received 5 Alberta Television and Film (Rosie) nominations, winning the 2017 Rosie for Production Design which was given to Alberta-based designer Shari Aspinall. The film also garnered the Audience Choice Award at the Central Alberta Film Festival (CAFF). The film was the closing film at both CAFF and Missions Fest Film Fest in Vancouver earlier this year and was an official selection of the Break Forth Canada Film Festival in Edmonton.
May 2017 marks five years since the stage play upon which the film is based toured Canada. “We’re thrilled that audiences continue to connect to this story in a very deep and personal way,” notes screenwriter Andrew Kooman who adapted his play, which has been produced Off-Broadway in New York, to the big screen. “As we look to international markets and begin conversations with foreign distributors, the message we’re sharing is that She Has A Name is a story that truly resonates with a wide audience and human trafficking is an issue people care deeply about.”
The Crown Awards recognize excellence in production and content of films for the “values” audience in the film market. Since 1973, the awards have been presented at the ICVM conference each year. The awards will be handed out during a ceremony at the International Christian Visual Media conference in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 28.
